FAQs

When someone returns a tablet, what happens to the information they downloaded?
Returned tablets are automatically “wiped clean” of any digital media previously downloaded onto them.

What about security? What prevents someone from stealing a tablet?
In order to check out a tablet, a patron must swipe their library card and credit card. During the check-out process, they agree to the fees imposed by the institution for returning items late, or not at all.

How does MediaSurfer work with our library system? Can we customize the process and procedures, or is it a one-size-fits-all solution?
MediaSurfer fully integrates with any ILS to help you save time, resources, and space. You can customize things like:
  • If and how much you want to charge for the service
  • Duration of check-out (48 hours, five days, etc.)
  • Late/no-return policies and fees imposed
  • A variety of tracking and reporting functions
What does MediaSurfer look like?
MediaSurfer is a stand-alone kiosk that employs intuitive touch-screens to walk patrons through the check-out process quickly and easily. While designed to blend harmoniously into any environment, it features a sleek, futuristic design (with illuminated logo) that quietly captivates.

How big is MediaSurfer?
MediaSurfer measures 53” high, 30” wide and 27” deep, and weighs 275 pounds. It’s a small footprint that packs a big punch, giving patrons easy, on-demand access to your entire collection of digital media.

How are the tablets charged? Do patrons have to charge them?
MediaSurfer automatically recharges the tablets before they are returned to the queue for distribution, so they’re ready to go when a patron checks them out.

Who will install the MediaSurfer unit?
MediaSurfer requires a simple, “plug and play” installation that will be completed by our service technicians in just minutes. They’ll even help you choose a location for the unit.

What about service after the sale? What if I have questions or something goes wrong?
We provide complete post-sale support, and offer a variety of service contract options.

Does the MediaSurfer unit come with tablets? Who supplies and maintains the tablets?
Libraries supply the tablets to Tech Logic in advance of the MediaSurfer unit being shipped, so that they can be registered and inventoried, individually outfitted in protective plastic casing and securely inserted inside the unit. Once received, libraries are responsible for maintaining the tablets.

How do libraries access the individual tablets with the casing on? Can it be removed? How?
Yes, libraries can remove the casing with a single, simple tool that will be included (along with instructions for use) as part of a kit supplied with the MediaSurfer unit.

Will I receive anything else as part of my MediaSurfer purchase?
Yes, the kit will also include service/support contact information, generic document templates (patron agreements, etc.) and a variety of marketing materials.

Can the library control what the member views as the tablet’s Home/landing page?
Yes. Libraries can customize the tablets so that the Home page of their organization’s web site is the tablet’s landing page, or designate another page as the tablet’s landing page, at their discretion.

Can a patron download ebooks from the tablet?
Yes, if the library has ebooks available.

Is the patron charged a fee if the tablet isn’t returned? Can members be sent email reminders/notifications?
Libraries have the ability to customize these types of things as part of their policies and procedures.

Are there any other companies that manufacture/sell units like MediaSurfer?
No. MediaSurfer is the first of its kind. Because of this, there is no need for an RFP process, and the units can be purchased directly from the manufacturer. MediaSurfer is patent pending.
